In the infancy of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. when chapters were blossoming and flourishing throughout the United States, both individual and collective efforts were being made to incorporate meaningful programs into various local chapter activities. The foundation of Guide Right can be traced to the St. Louis Alumni Chapter and to Leon W. Steward who is the “Father of the Guide Right.” Kappa League was founded on Thursday, February 12, 1969, at LeRoy Locke High School. Later, Kappa League was adopted by the Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., in August 1970. In 1972, the Tallahassee Kappa League was founded, at the Florida A&M University Developmental Research School. Today, the Tallahassee Kappa League is the oldest youth organization standing in the community.
Mission
The mission of Kappa League is to develop the next generation of leaders and achievers of impact and influence in the world.
Goals
The goals of the Kappa League program are: ✦ For each young man to discover his unique skills and abilities in order to find and fulfill his purpose in life ✦ Prepare young men (particularly those of color) to become leaders of impact and influence ✦ Promote academic achievement by encouraging enrollment in honors and advanced placement (AP) courses ✦ To obtain 100% high school graduation and collegiate/trade school acceptance rates ✦ Train Kappa Leaguers to become role models of positive change for other youth within their school and community.
Service
The Tallahassee Kappa League is active in the community through service projects. These projects help benefit young men to grow into successful businessmen. The Kappa League routinely participates in community events such as Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway, Soul Santa Service, MLK celebration, Farmshare events, Relay For Life, and Adopt-a-Road street clean up to name a few. Members average 125 community service hours eacn year.
7 Phases
Through club-oriented activities, the officers and members of the Kappa League perform projects that will expose them to planning, execution, reporting ideas, and simulating good leadership characteristics designed to raise their aspiration levels. All activities and programs are taken from one or more of the following phases: Phase I – Self Identity/ Purpose Phase II -Training Phase III – Competition Phase IV – Social Phase V – Health Education Phase VI – Economic Empowerment & Education Phase VII – College & Career.
